Is Binge Drinking Alcoholism?

Question:
I'm curious if the majority of AA members view binge drinkers as alcoholics. I think my husband is one but he sometimes will go weeks without a drink. Whenever he does pick up a drink however, mainly on his day off he always will drink until drunk. I read a pamphlet on binge drinkers once and it wasn’t conclusive whether or not AA labeled them as alcoholics. Some people can go even months without a drink however will binge drink than go for another extended length of time without it. I'm thinking it must be a stronger psychological addiction than it is physical.

Answer:
No. Binge drinking, in and of itself is not alcoholism. Alcoholism is a loss of control. In other words, you drink much more than you intend to or you drink at times you didn't intend to.

Most binge drinking is done deliberately. If you find that you intended to have a few and ended up binge drinking it may be something to look at.

That said, binge drinking IS risky and irresponsible behavior that can result in serious or even life threatening consequences.
