Question:
What exactly is "cardiac rehab"?
How is this different from being treated for any cardiac condition?
Why would somebody go to a "cardiac rehab" center, rather than just
recuperate from a heart attack the usual way?
Are there such things as "approved" cardiac rehab centers?
If so, how can I get a list of them?
Answer:
Cardiac rehab addresses the physical, emotional and educational aspects
of recovery for a patient after a coronary event.
The intent is to monitor a persons responses to resumption of normal
activities and exercise after an event or surgery, This provides info to
the MD on the patients responses, such as heart rate, blood pressure,
heart rhythm and tolerance. Secondly to educate the person about their
risk factors and what to do as well as guidance regarding activity
precautions, and symptoms to report. And lastly to reassure the patient
emotionally after the event regarding their future and resumption of
their lifestyle.
Typically there are 3-4 "phases". Phase 1 being the care during the
inpatient portion. Phase 2 being a more intensive outpatient treatment
after discharge, And Phase 3 and 4 are the longer term maintainance
programs.
Most Cardiac centers have a cardiac rehab program. Some insurance may
dictate where you attend.
