Question:
I'd like to know the definition of occupational theraphy.
Especially, about the Occupation?
In korean language, this word is interpreted with the mean of "working".
Answer:
Yes it is about working! Occupational therapy helps to heal, and to prevent,
injuries which happen at the workplace because of the nature of the types of
job people do. A well known one is repetitive strain injury to the wrist
because of sustained typing and using a computer mouse. I have suffered this
injury and it's very disabling because I could hardly use my right hand for
a while. My employers sent me to see an occupational therapist who assessed
whether or not this injury was likely to be long term and therefore likely
to affect my ability to my job and they didn't want me to sue them for
damages!!. (Not very nice of my employer, I could have lost my job -
thankfully I was passed as OK. It was a physiotherapist who advised me on
getting a wrist restraint which enabled the injury to heal). In manual work
back strains are common and people need to be taught by occupational
therapists how to lift heavy objects safely.
